Abstract

Taoism and Environmental PhilosophyLee, KwonThe concept of Nature(自然) in Taoism means self-so. The basis of the variety of things is Nature which is the unifying principle of the world in Lao-Zhuang philosophy. Therefore in Nature human right does not conflict with the right of other things in the world. The concept of Nature implies that anything in the world moves and change in self-so. The autonomy in things can be established from this point in Taoism. The concept of Nature is the base of taoist ethics. Nature is represented by Wu-Wei(無爲) in behavioral context. Wu-Wei is the behavior that obeys Nature and is based on Wu(無). Wu indicates the limit of human intellet. It means that we, mankind is not the center of the world but a marginal existence.
