Abstract
It is worthy of notice that Spinoza's philosophy can have the ecological implications, because environmental disasters of modern society would develop into the phase of crisis. Spinoza contends that nature is God as a substance containing to all natural things and human beings. Each human has the conatus which endeavors to persevere in its being, and it is ethically right for each thing to do it. Since reason demands nothing which is opposed to nature, it would afford for other living beings to accumulate the virtues for their preservation. Ultimately all natural entities, including the human species, together will advance into a greater perfection for God. From the ecological perspective, Spinoza’s pantheism leads man to have some mystique for nature and to respect it genuinely. If we can afford the democracy of virtue by Spinoza, it will be possible to insist on the intrinsic value for nature. Because of these characteristics, Spinoza's thoughts had an important effect on the camp of environmental movements. Especially deep ecology asserts its two basic norms. one is self-realization, the other is biospheric egalitarianism. Self-realization means identification with the largest organic self beyond the individual person. Boiospheric egalitarianism means that no ecological species can be regarded as more valuable than any other species. By the way, it is supposed that these thoughts was saturated with Spinoza’s philosophy. I discern the core characteristics of Spinoza’s philosophy and identify how those affect the camp of ecological movements. However I briefly suggest that deep ecology under the influence of Spinoza's thoughts will fall into the difficult situation of anti-humanism, since it accepts a monistic holism focusing nature-centrism. Thus I regard Spinoza's philosophy as a stepping-stone for a ecological society.
