Abstract
In this study we investigate the effect of auditor scale on TypeⅡ audit error. A TypeⅡ audit error occurs where bankrupt company does not receive a going concern modified audit report from the auditor prior to filing bankruptcy. The economic perspective suggests that problems with audit independence may be more likely arise in the smaller scale of auditor. We examine audit reports for 119 companies in the KOSPI market and in the KOSDAQ market entering into legal reconstruction during the years 2002-2016. Our empirical hypothesis is that there is significant relation between auditor scale and TypeⅡ audit error. To verify our empirical hypothesis, We use a logistic regression where the type of audit opinion issued immediately prior to bankruptcy filing is dependent variable(GC) and auditor scale is explanation variable(BIG). The control variable in this logistic regression are comparny size(Ln(asset)), financial healthy(CUR, DEB), earnings ability(ROA), cash supply(OPE), and bankruptcy lag(DIS). Our empirical results are as follows. First, the coefficient of auditor scale (1 if Big 4 auditor, 0 if not) is insignificant. This result does not support the position that auditor scale affect going concern audit opinon owing to the economic perspective. Second, the coefficient of ROA variable is negative and significant. This result supports the position that profitability index deteriorates in bankrupt company and this finding is consistent with prior research. This finding may be related to the regulation reinforcement on the auditing profession when external audit act was revised to amplify auditor responsibility related to false auditing during the years 1998-2001.
