이 논문은 식물이나 식물에 대한 인간의 행동에서 “도덕유추적인 속성”들을 찾아보는 것이 가능할 것이라는 문제인식에서부터 출발하여, 식물윤리의 원칙들을 정초하기 위한 출발점을 식물의 성장능력에서 찾고자 한다. 가장 기본적인 사실은 식물의 삶 내지 삶의 실현이 인간의 영향에 의해 해쳐지거나 촉진될 수 있다는 것이다. 식물에 대한 도덕적인 고려가 인간의 의무의 범위 내에 들어오기 어려운 대상이라는 것이 분명하지만, 식물의 도덕적 지위에 대한 것은 생태윤리적인 담론 안에서 어떤 방식으로든 고려될 수 있고 또 고려되어야 하는 물음이다. 식물의 도덕적 지위나 식물을 도덕적 고려의 대상에 포함해야 한다는 주장의 핵심적인 부분은 식물의 내재적 가치를 인정하느냐의 여부이다. 이 연구에서는 식물의 삶의 현상에서 성장과 스트레스의 의미를 밝혀보고, 성장이 지니고 있는 기술적, 규범적 성격을 통해 성장의 독자적 가치의 인정 여부를 논하였다. 이러한 논의의 기본적인 모델로서 인간의 행위결과에 대한 직접적인 고려의 요청을 통해 식물이 도덕적 존중을 받아야 한다는 칼호프의 주장을 분석하였다. 그리고 성장이 그 자체로 가치로운 것이라는 도덕적 직관과 성장의 보호라는 측면에서 요나스적 책임모델이 식물에 대한 인간의 도덕적 존중을 정당화하는 근거로서 유용하다고 주장하였다. 생명체로서 식물은 무언가를 추구하는 존재이고, 이러한 추구에 인간이 직접적이든, 간접적이든 영향력을 행사할 수 있고, 이러한 영향력의 행사가 식물의 생명현상에 부정적인 측면에서 본질적인 위협을 초래하거나 아니면 긍정적인 측면에서 생명현상을 촉진시킬 수 있다면, 이러한 영향력에 대한 도덕적인 고려를 해야 한다는 것은 우리의 도덕적 직관에 해당한다.
Abstract
This paper began with the premise that we need philosophical discussion on the characteristics of living beings, and that it is possible to find moral-analogical characteristics in humans behavior which give harm or advantage to plant. The debate on the moral status of the plant depends on the intrinsic value of the plant. This paper analysed the meaning of the growth and stress of the plant, and stressed the independent value of the growth through the descriptive and normative character of the growth. The plants as living beings seek something. We can make direct or indirect influences on this pursue of the plant. And if these influences make inherent danger or if they facilitate the phenomenon of living, it is our moral intuition that we should make moral consideration on that.
