본고는 식물을 도덕적 논의 대상으로 삼을 수 있는 ‘윤리학적 근거’와 ‘생물학적 근거’를 밝힘으로써 인간의 식물에 대한 도덕적 태도 및 행위 원리를 정립하는 것을 목적으로 한다. 식물윤리학의 윤리학적 근거는 인간의 도덕성과 존엄성 실현을 목적으로 하는 ‘약한 인간중심주의’와 자연 전체를 질서정연한 좋은 세상으로 실현하는 것을 목표로 삼으면서 인간의 공작용을 강조하는 ‘전일주의’에 의해 정립될 수 있다고 생각된다. 그리고 식물윤리학의 생물학적 근거는 개별 식물이 생물학적 종의 특성에 부합하는 정상적이고 생명력 넘치는 최적의 생명 활동의 상태로서 ‘번성’ 개념에서 찾아질 수 있다고 생각된다. 본고는 이러한 식물윤리학의 윤리학적 근거와 생물학적 근거를 토대로 식물윤리학의 세 가지 원리로서 ‘정의의 원리’, ‘악행 금지의 원리’, ‘선행의 원리’를 제안하였다. (1) 정의의 원리: 각 식물이 정상적이고 생명력 넘치는 최적의 생명 활동을 유지할 수 있도록 각 식물의 생물학적 종의 특성에 부합하게 대우해야 한다. (2) 악행 금지의 원리: 인간은 최소한 자신의 사소한 이익을 위해 식물의 정상적인 생명 활동을 방해하지 말아야 한다. (3) 선행의 원리: 우리는 적극적 의미에서 개별 식물이 그 생물학적 종의 특성에 부합하는 정상적이고 생명력 넘치는 최적의 생명 활동을 수행할 수 있도록 도와야 한다.
Abstract
The purpose of this paper is to suggest principles of ethics of plants by investigating an ethical and biological basis, in which plants can be discussed from an ethical point of view. An ethical basis of ethics of plants can be justified by ‘weak anthropocentrism’ and ‘holism’. A biological basis can be established by the concept ‘flourishing’, which means an optimal state of biological activity in accordance with a biological characteristic of each plant. Based on these bases of ethics of plants, I have suggested three principles of ethics of plants, namely ‘principle of justice’, ‘principle of nonmaleficence’ and ‘principle of benevolence’. (1) principle of justice: We should treat each plant in accordance with its biological characteristic in order to keep its optimal biological state. (2) principle of nonmaleficence: We should not interfere with a normal biological activity of each plant for our small profit. (3) principle of benevolence: We should promote a normal biological activity of each plant in accordance with its biological characteristic.
