기업 가치와 재무성과의 관련성 연구：투자의사 결정 시 ESG 자료의 효과성

[연구목적] 최근 발표된 ESG 관련 논문들을 살펴보면 정반대의 결과들로 나타나고 있는것으로 조사된다. 연구 결과 중 ESG 평가가 기업 가치에 긍정적인 영향을 준다는 결과들이지배적인데 본 연구는 한국 ESG 기준원의 자료를 활용하여 선행연구들의 결과를 다시 한번살펴보고 검증을 통해 ESG (평가) 정보가 투자의사 결정에 가치 있는 자료가 될 수 있는지를 실증 검증을 통해 확인해 보고자 연구를 진행했다. [연구방법] 본 연구는 한국 ESG 기준원 평가(등급)자료를 활용하여 연구를 진행하였으며ESG 등급을 A＋～A 등급을 받은 기업들을 대상으로 연구를 진행했다. 기업 재무 데이터는Fn－guide에서 수집했으며 자료가 확보되지 않는 대상 기업은 표집에서 제외했다. 수집된자료에 대해 신뢰성과 타당성을 검토하였으며 회귀분석을 통해 가설을 검증했다. [연구결과] 결과를 간단히 살펴보면 많은 연구의 결과와 반대로 기업 가치(Tobin’s Q)와기업의 영업성과(EBIDTA/TA)는 유의한 음(－)의 관계가 있는 것으로 나타났다. 또한 기업가치와 재무성과(성장률)의 관계도 유의한 음(－)의 관계가 있는 것으로 나타났다. 이 결과들을 살펴보면 ESG 평가로 인한 기업의 가치 상승은 기업의 영업 성과 & 재무성과에 부정적인 영향력이 있는 것으로 판단이 된다. [연구의 시사점] 최근 들어 투자의사 결정을 함에 있어 기업의 재무제표를 대신하는 평가도구로 ESG 평가(등급)를 인식하기 시작하였다. 본 연구의 결과로 본다면 ESG 등급(평가)자료는 투자의사 결정에 불완전한 요소로 작용할 수 있다고 판단하며 투자자들은 ESG 자료를 투자의사 결정에 활용하는 데 있어 신중할 필요가 있다고 본다.
Abstract
[Purpose] Recently published ESG－related studies, it is investigated that the opposite results appear. Among the research results, the dominant results are that ESG evaluation has a positive effect on corporate value. This study was conducted to examine the results of previous studies using data from the Korea ESG Standards Institute once again and to confirm through empirical verification whether ESG can be valuable data for investment decision－making. [Methodology] This study was conducted using evaluation (rating) data from the Korea ESG Standards Institute and was conducted on companies that received ESG ratings from A＋ to A. Corporate financial data was collected from Fn－guide, and target companies for which data was not available were excluded from the sample. The reliability and validity of the collected data were reviewed, and the hypothesis was verified through regression analysis. [Findings] A quick look at the results shows that, contrary to the results of most papers, there is a significant negative relationship between corporate value (Tobin’s Q) and corporate operating performance (EBIDTA/TA). Additionally, the relationship between corporate value (Tobin’s Q) and financial performance was also found to have a significant negative relationship. Looking at these results, it is judged that the increase in company value due to ESG evaluation has a negative impact on the company’s operating performance and financial performance. [Implications] ESG evaluation (rating) has begun to be recognized as an evaluation tool that replaces a company’s financial statements when making investment decisions. Based on the results of this study, we believe that ESG rating (evaluation) data can act as an incomplete factor in investment decision－making, and investors need to be cautious when using the data.
