Abstract
Many recent studies on the high performance work systems(HPWSs) in the field of strategic human resource management show the evidence that introduction of new innovative practices can increase the financial performance of a firm. The purposes of introducing HPWSs are to increase the skill level of employees, to motivate them to work harder, and to give them opportunities to take part in the decision making process of a firm. In this study, because of criticism that much research has focused on the relationship between HPWS and firm performance in the manufacturing industry, we attempt to examine the relationship in the service industry and compare the effect of HPWSs between two different industries(service industry versus manufacturing industry). The results of this study show that HPWSs have a statistically significant positive effect on the firm performance in the service industry and the level of effect is higher in the service industry than in the manufacturing industry. Based on these results, we discuss the practical implications of this study and make suggestions for the future research.
