Abstract
Using date from the Occupational Employment Survey (OES), this paper examines the trends and the driving factors behind the recent changes in income inequality of self-employed, employer and paid employee in Korea between 2002 and 2007. Decomposition analyses using MLD are utilized in order to clarify the reason for the increase in income inequality in this duration. Main findings are as follows. First, the income gap between self-employed and paid employee expanded to a considerable extent during the period 2002 to 2007. Second, although the degree of income inequality is lower in paid employee than in self-employed, the increase rate of inequality is considerably higher in the former than in the latter. Third, this study divides each employment statue into several sub-groups by personal and job characteristics and compares the explanatory powers of the characteristics for income inequality. The results show that in almost characteristics the explanatory powers are much lower in self-employed than in paid employee. Fourth, another interesting finding is that the most important contributor to the increase in entire income inequality between 2002 and 2007 is the widened wage gap between regular and non-regular paid employees.
