초록
This research analyzes the demographic statuses of a synthetic cohort using Census data between 1970 and 2005 in order to examine how the early life course transition has changed in Korea during the past 40 years. The results show that timings of school leaving, workforce entry, marriage, and parenthood were concentrated and spreads were compressed between 1970 and 1990, which implies the strengthening of age-based gradedness and ordering norm according to the standardization of life course. Since 1990 (at least since 2000) we see a reversal of the long-term trend toward de-standardization with a drop in prevalence of familiar transitions, de-couplings of timing, de-compressions of the spreads, and weakenings of ordering norm. Entropy differences by age groups suggest that plurality of statuses has decreased substantially at teen ages (ages 15-19) over time, which is a result of increased institutional standards of school attendance. Status heterogeneity for women aged between 25 and 40 has increased since 1970s, whereas status heterogeneity for men with the same age group began rising after 1990s. The de-standardization trends emerged as young people, especially young men, faced with more uncertain economic prospects, delayed the familiar transitions and made the transition to adulthood less uniformly. It implies that the recent de-standardization of life course should be interpreted as 'involuntary individualization'.
