성인기로의 이행을 통해 본 저출생 시대 청년층의 교차적 불평등

본 연구는 청년층이 ‘저출산 문제’의 당사자로 호명되는 맥락에서 출산을 넘어 성인기 이행으로, 현시점의 청년 문제를 넘어 청년기의 역사적 성격 변화로 인식의 지평을 확장하여 지난 30년간 20~30대의 성인기로의 이행의 변화에 대한 비교를 통해 현재 청년층의 성인기 이행의 특징을 파악하고자 했다. 이를 위해 1990년, 2005년, 2020년 세 시기의 <인구주택총조사> 2% 표본자료를 비교하였고, 분석방법은 Modell, Furstenberg & Hershberg(1976)의 고전적인 생애과정 분석법과 엔트로피 지수를 활용한 Fussell(2005)의 분석법을 적용하였다. 분석 결과, 여성의 교육 경험은 남성과 차이가 없어졌으나 취업 후 노동경력을 유지하지 못한다는 것, 여성에게 취업과 가족형성이 부정적, 갈등적 관계라는 것은 지난 30년간 변함이 없었다. 그럼에도 졸업 후 취업 경험 없이 가족형성을 하든 취업을 중단하고 가족형성을 하든 가족을 중심으로 조직되었던 ‘여성적’ 이행 경로는 감소해 왔다. 성인기로의 이행을 규정하는 계층의 영향은 커져서 하위계층은 청년기의 시작부터 학업과 취업을 병행하는 경우가 증가했고, 상위계층은 경력형성 기간이 장기화된 만큼 가족형성 시점이 늦어졌으나 더 많은 비율이 압축적으로 결혼과 부모됨으로 이행했다. 청년기의 출발점에서부터 형성된 계층에 따른 기회구조의 격차와 젠더에 따른 기회구조의 격차가 중첩된 변별적 영향의 누적된 결과는 현재 청년층의 가족형성 영역에서 드러나고 있다. 현재 청년층의 낮은 가족형성 비율에 따른 성인기 이행 경로의 분화가 단순히 가족형성 시점이 30대 이후로 늦춰지는 이행기의 연장일지, 청년기와 성인기의 경계 자체를 흐리며 성인됨의 의미를 새롭게 재구성해 갈 시발점일지 그 가능성은 열려 있다.
Abstract
This study seeks to identify the characteristics of the transition to adulthood among young adults today through a comparison of the changes in the transition to adulthood in the 20s and 30s over the past 30 years. For this purpose, the 2% sample data of the Population and Housing Census in the three periods of 1990, 2005, and 2020 were compared, and the life course analysis and entropy index-based methods (Fussell, 2005; Modell, Furstenberg & Hershberg, 1976 & Fussell, 2005) were applied. The main findings are as follows. Women's educational experience was no different from that of men, but the inability to maintain a working career after employment and the negative and conflictual relationship between employment and family formation for women have not changed over the past 30 years. Nevertheless, the ‘feminine’ transition path that was organized around the family has decreased. The impact of class in defining the transition to adulthood has grown, with those at the lower end of the spectrum increasingly combining schooling and employment from the start of young adulthood, and those at the upper end of the spectrum delaying family formation due to prolonged career formation, but more compressing the transition to marriage and parenthood. The cumulative results of the differential impact of inequality in the opportunity structure based on class and gender, which has been established since the beginning of one’s youth, are being seen in the area of family formation among the current young people. Is the differentiation of transition to adulthood due to the current low rate of family formation among young people simply an extension of the transition period in which family formation is delayed until the 30s or later, or is it the starting point to blur the boundaries between youth and adulthood and to redefine the meaning of adulthood? The possibility is open.
