Abstract
This study examine the relationship between the industrial structure and the economic development of South-Eastern wide-economic zone. For this purpose, we have measured industrial diversity in the wide-economic zones using various diversity measuring approaches. We have also estimated the effects of industrial diversity on the economic growth and stability in each wide-economic zone, focusing especially the South-Eastern wide-economic zone. The main results obtained from our empirical study are as follows. First, industrial diversity might reduce the GRDP growth rate, its effect is not statistically significant. Second, industrial diversity might reduce the unemployment rate and its effect is statistically significant. but in case of East-Southern zone, the more specialized industries, the lower the unemployment rate will be. Third, the effect of industrial diversity on the ratio of dishonored bills is not statistically significant. From these empirical results, the local government need revalue its industrial policy specialized in several industries to consider the characteristics of the wide-economic zone, because the industrial specialization policy could increase the unemployment rate or the economic instability of the local economy in some wide-economic zones. Therefore, it will be desirable that the central government supports the industrial policy suited to each region rather than the uniform policy.
