This paper explores the historical process and organizing characteristics of workers’ cooperatives movement in Japan and South Korea. Since the 1990s, the workers’ cooperatives movement of two countries has interacted with each other. The workers' cooperative movement in South Korea was the beginning at that time. Whereas the workers’ cooperatives movement in Japan was relatively active and had a stable operating system. So workers’ cooperatives movement in South Korea has received a lot of influence from Japan. The workers’ cooperatives movement of the two countries has some similarities. First, they were organized based on the experience of social movement. Second, they have the aim of solving poverty and unemployment. Third, sometimes they made use of the government policy. However, there are several important differences between Japan and South Korea. These differences also provide important implications for the workers’ cooperatives movement in South Korea. They are as follows. Firstly, the workers’ cooperatives in Japan have achieved a relatively successful organization having social influence Secondly, workers’ cooperatives in Japan are actively involved in community-based practices. Thirdly, workers’ cooperatives in Japan put emphasis on the ideology and principles, and constantly strive for social solidarity.
Abstract
