Abstract
Since the enactment of the Framework Act on Cooperatives in Korea, many worker cooperatives have been established and operated. However, little is known about the experiences and perceptions of the members of these cooperatives. This study investigates and analyzes the experiences and perceptions of the members of worker cooperatives in Korea and Japan. The EMES framework was utilized for the analysis, and data were collected through a questionnaire survey of Korean and Japanese worker cooperative members and analyzed by a hierarchical cluster analysis and ANOVA. The analysis identified six distinct clusters for the dimensions suggested by the EMES framework on the economic and entrepreneurial, social, and participatory governance dimensions. The findings reveal the experiences and perceptions of the members of worker cooperatives and how empowered they are. The theoretical implication of this study is that it analyzes the experiences and perceptions of worker cooperative members, which are difficult topics to find in existing literature. These findings contribute to the existing literature by providing empirical insights into how worker members experience worker cooperative membership in these countries and to what extent they are empowered as worker members. This study is exploratory in nature, but it can be used as a basis for further research to substantiate the experiences and perceptions of worker cooperative members. The results of this study can also help managers and policy makers in the field to understand the experiences and perceptions of worker cooperative members.
