Abstract

This study employs data from the ‘Seoul Youth Panel’ to investigate the relationships among social participation, life satisfaction, and awareness of youth services(welfare, jobs, housing services) among two distinct groups: youth who moved to Seoul after living elsewhere before the age of 18 and youth who have resided in Seoul since before the age of 18. Using mediation effect analysis, the study explores whether the awareness of youth services mediates the relationship between social participation and life satisfaction. The findings indicate that, for long-term residents of Seoul, awareness of welfare services significantly mediates the relationship between social participation and life satisfaction. Conversely, for immigrant youth, this mediating effect was not observed. Moreover, awareness of job and housing services did not show a significant mediation effect in either group. These results highlight disparities in service accessibility and awareness between long-term residents and immigrant youth, suggesting that the latter face significant barriers to utilizing public services. The study underscores the critical need for targeted policy interventions to enhance immigrant youth's access to public services and their integration into Seoul's social fabric. Policies focusing on early-stage support, including welfare and housing stabilization, as well as comprehensive outreach programs, are essential for improving life satisfaction and reducing inequalities among youth groups. By addressing these gaps, Seoul's youth policies can better support the social and emotional well-being of all young people.
