초록

This article aims to suggest proper definitions of ‘llang’, ‘eullang’, ‘illang’, etc. in Korean dictionary. Headwords in Korean dictionary include not only the three forms above but also ‘koseollang’, ‘eseollang’, ‘ellang’, etc. which consist of ‘llang’ and an ending or a particle. In the current Korean dictionaries, the definition of these entry words seems to be incorrect or insufficient in many cases. Moreover, the list of headwords embodying ‘llang’ varies according to dictionaries. This present paper analyzes corpus usages to propose correct and sufficient definitions of ‘llang’ type particles. I argue against the description of the current dictionaries which suppose that ‘llang’ and ‘illang’ are in complementary relations. The meaning of ‘eullang’ is similar to ‘llang’ and ‘illang’, but ‘eullang’ only appears in object or adverb position. The morphological relationships among ‘llang’ type particles should be revised in dictionaries, and some complex forms embedding ‘llang’ that are simply a combination of particles (sequential construction of particles) should be deleted from the entries. Despite that the meaning of ‘llang’ is similar to that of particle ‘eun/neun’, ‘llang’ types are often combined with ‘eun/neun’ in order to emphasize its meaning. Additionally, ‘llang’ is distinguished from ‘eun/neun’ by its modal meaning which states speaker’s strong wish. This modal meaning affects to the frequent use of ‘llang’ with negative verbs like ‘malda’ or verbs expressing suggestion or prohibition.
