Abstract
This study aims to analyze cultural elements in volumes 1-4 of the revised Standard Korean for Elementary School Students textbooks, and compare them with the previous edition. By examining the differences between the current and previous editions, this research seeks to identify gaps in cultural education and understand the evolution of KSL in relation to cultural education. Additionally, this study aims to highlight areas of improvement in the current textbooks and provide recommendations for future revisions. To achieve these objectives, this research first identifies the number of cultural elements in the revised <Standard Korean for Elementary School Students> textbooks and analyzes each element based on the following criteria: cultural type, method of presenting cultural content, and cultural background. Cultural types are categorized into mental, behavioral, and material culture, while cultural content presentation methods are analyzed to determine whether cultural elements are integrated with other language activities or presented separately. Lastly, cultural background analyses are conducted to understand the context of cultural elements, whether it be Korean culture, universal culture, foreign culture, or comparative culture. The identified cultural elements in the current textbooks are then compared with the previous edition in both quantitative and qualitative aspects. This includes analyzing the increase in cultural elements, as well as comparing the positive and negative changes in each of the three analysis criteria. By identifying areas of improvement, this study proposes suggestions for the development of future textbook revisions.
