Abstract

In the various materials of Jeolla Province(전라도), there is a traditionally handed down village document related to the Dongshangye(東床禮) ceremony. Dongshangye is a tradition that takes place as part of a wedding ceremony, where the groom serves food and drinks to his relatives and friends at his bride’s home. This tradition is also found in the materials of Donggye(洞契). For example, in the case of Gumandonggye(金安洞契) in Naju and Sanmakdonggye(山幕洞契) in Haenam, it is said that “at first, the Dongshangye ceremony was performed as a custom of marriage, but it gradually became a process of allowing entry into Donggye.” Manghojeong in Yeongam is a village of the same surname for the Hoeamgong branch of the Gyeongju Lee clan. The Lee clan settled in Yeongam during the time of Hoeamgong Lee Ban-gi(李磻 琦, 1510∼1597). When the Imjin War broke out, Hoeam-gong’s second son, Lee In-geol(李仁傑), participated in the battle of Haengju and was killed. Due to this, the Lee clan moved from Hoemun-ri to Mangho-ri. In the 18th century, the Yeongam Manghojeong village of the Hoeamgong branch of the Gyeongju Lee clan practiced a rite called “dongsangye”. After performing the rite on Korean thankgiving Day in 1779, the descendants organized the Dongsanggye(東床稧). They also built a pavilion called Manghojeong with the funds from the rite. At this time, Manghojeong served as the name of the village, the space for performing the dongsangye, and the gathering place for the Donggakgye(洞閣契). This is why documents of the Dongsanggye and the Daedonggye are transmitted together at Manghojeong. When the members of the Dongsanggye and the Daedonggye were searched in the genealogy, a common factor was detected. In other words, the members of the Dongsanggye were the descendants who performed the dongsangye for Lee In-geol, a figure who was loyal during the Imjin War, and the members of the Daedonggye were the descendants of each lineage centered on the five sons of Lee Ju-nam(李柱南), who moved to Manghojeong. In the 19th century, Dongsanggye built Yeonggak(影閣) to enshrine the portrait of Lee Je-hyun(李齊 賢), a civil servant during the Goryeo Dynasty, and subsequently established Yeonghosa(靈湖祠), a civil servant, to enshrine the memorial tablet of Imran loyalist Lee In-gul. Now, Manghojeong Pavilion served as an auditorium for Yeonggak and a ritual for Yeonghosa. In view of this, the concept of the Dongshangye ceremony at Manghojeong is established as a ritual of “descendants paying tribute to their ancestors” As a result, it is perceived as having a significantly different meaning than the previous Dongshangye ceremony related to the traditional rites of passage, or the initiation process of joining the Donggye.
