Abstract

This paper examines the interaction effect of CEO characteristics and dividend payout on investment expenditures. I propose that relationship between dividend payout and investment expenditures is influenced by CEO characteristics. I use CEO age, degree of education, major, and their position in the company as CEO characteristics. This study also examines whether the role of CEO on research and development investments differ from the role on capital investments. Because research and development investments have higher uncertainty of future economic benefit and information asymmetry between managers and outside suppliers of capital. I perform the OLS regression analysis using korean listing companies to test hypotheses of this paper and find the result as follows. Results show that for CEO with higher level of education results in higher level of investment expenditures and there is the interaction effect of level of education and dividend payout on investment expenditures. I find that when CEOs take natural science or engineering science as their major, investment expenditures increase compared with CEOs take social science or humane studies as their major. I also provide evidence that firm with lower dividend payout and lower CEO ownership are more likely investment activities. When I group investment into two classes, capital investment and R&D investment, there is the evidence that firm with younger CEO or lower dividend payout and younger CEO increase capital investment. The findings also lend support to firm perform the active R&D investment when CEOs take natural or engineering science as their major, implying they seek renovation and growth through R&D investment. I expect that this paper would suggest the implication for the role of CEO on investment policies that CEO can get over the negative relationship between internally generated cash flows and investment decision.
