Abstract
Corporate credit ratings represent the state of the enterprise in the capital market. Corporate executives are recognized as a very important indicator in the capital market. Corporate executives will want to show higher profits in order to have a favorable impact on credit rating decisions. At this time, Corporate executives choose two earnings management: Accrual-based Earnings Management(AEM) and Real Earnings Management(REM). However, the two earnings management have different characteristics that affect the future corporate value. In other words, the AEM has only a small effect on the intrinsic value of the company because it only processes the profit on the book, and the negative influence is relatively short afterwards. On the other hand, REM distort corporate management decisions and have a more long-term negative impact on the company's intrinsic value. Therefore, in order to maximize profits in the long run, it is expected that REM will be avoided even if there is incentive for earnings management. Previous research has shown that audit quality, ownership structure, and insider trading have different effects on earnings management methods, but there are few studies on other factors. This study used corporate credit ratings, which are highly correlated with upward earnings management in capital markets. We also conducted an empirical analysis of whether the corporate credit rating has a differential effect on AEM and REM. The sample is from 2006 to 2016, which is a KOSPI-KOSDAQ listed company. As a result of this study, there is positive(+) relationship between credit rating and AEM and negative(-) relationship with REM in the same sample. In other words, the higher the rating, the lower the REM is because the REM has a negative impact on the company's performance over the long term. Instead, corporate executives increase AEM, which is determined by discretion. As the credit rating declined, there was a positive(+) relationship in AEM and a negative(-) relationship in REM in the same sample. In other words, if the credit rating level is lower than the previous year, it will increase the REM level, which is relatively less restrictive in terms of short-term problem avoidance such as financing and less likely to be detected by financial authorities. However, it is interpreted that AEM with high risk of being caught in monitoring by external auditors or financial institutions is reduced. This is new evidence that corporate executives are using AEM and REM as a substitute for earnings management attributes and credit ratings. The results of this study are expected to help rational decision-making by stakeholders, investors and creditors, especially credit rating agencies.
