Abstract
[Purpose]This study examined the effect of corporate customer concentration on corporate tax strategies. [Methodology]The major variable Customer Concentration(CC) which means sales from a major customer are more than 10% of the supplier’s total sales was measured by dummy variables. Tax avoidance was measured by five measures which are (cash) effective tax rate, 3-year cumulative (cash) effective tax rate and DD_BTD. [Findings]First, there is a positive (+) relationship between corporate customer-concentration (CC) and tax avoidance. Second, the result that the higher the degree of market competition, the stronger the positive (+) relationship between customer-concentration (CC) and tax avoidance is observed in 3GETR (three-year cumulative effective tax rate) model. Third, when firms belong to a large business group, the positive (+) relationship between customer-concentration (CC) and tax avoidance is alleviated and this result is observed in 3GETR model. Fourth, the finding from the quantile regression analysis just for firms with customer concentration confirmed that the customer concentration ratio (CCR) and tax avoidance has a positive (+) relationship from the intermediate to high quartile (q=0.5-0.8). Lastly, the finding from sensitivity analysis confirmed that there is no difference in the result that firms with customer concentration actively avoid tax whether the customer-concentration (CC) pile is divided into 10% or other ratios. [Implications]First, this study expands the scope of research related to the influence of corporate customer concentration. Second, prior studies related to tax avoidance determinants are expanded by verifying the impact of major customers who are non-financial stakeholders on the supplier.
