Abstract
[Purpose] This study examines whether the level of business diversification of firms is affected by the problem of overconfidence, a typical cognitive attribute of managers. [Methodology] We set the period from 2011 to 2021 and conducted empirical analysis on Korean KOSPI/KOSDAQ listed companies. [Findings] We do not find a statistically significant relationship between managerial overconfidence and diversification, and the results are consistent across all measures of overconfidence. These empirical findings suggest that managers' overconfidence can help shareholders identify the risks associated with diversification and effectively limit the negative effects of diversification. [Implications] First, this study is expected to improve information users' understanding of overconfidence, a typical cognitive attribute of managers. Second, this study contributes by extending the literature on the determinants of diversification level.
