Abstract

This paper is to examine mistakes and accomplishments in an online literature course, opened for the second semester 2020 at a university located in Busan. The ultimate objective of “Literary Theories and Works” was to encourage students to enjoy literary works in their everyday lives. In the process of designing this course, my primary concern was to choose the right literary texts for students since they would need aesthetic competence to read literary works rather than knowledge of literary theories. An online course is supposed to have views and approaches differentiated from an offline one. However, I had no other choice than to use the same class objectives and literary texts and to adopt a few methodological skills for online education when I was forced to transfer the prior offline course to a new online one under the circumstance of COVID-19. I spent much time citing lines from a literary work in lecture videos and required my students to answer two or three follow-up questions as a discussion assignment each week. I could interact with my students and build rapport with them through their writing and my feedback. The students could present their opinions about literary works and speak themselves: they all grew up through this course. On the other hand, this online course provided them with little opportunity to interact with peer students and to lead their own learning, which should be improved hereafter.
