Abstract
This study developed exploratory discussions to lay the philosophical foundation of volunteerism. The three basic principles of volunteering, ‘voluntarity’, ‘non-remunerativeness’ and ‘public interests’ were used as the starting point for discussion. The three principles are mainly used as criteria for distinguishing between volunteer work and non-volunteer work, but here we focused on their potential as a philosophical foundation. In order to philosophically develop the context contained in the three principles, 'Volunteerism', which assumes volunteerism as a major mechanism for running society, 'Reciprocity', which views volunteerism as a relationship between citizens, and 'Philanthropy', which discusses public interest as a value to be achieved through volunteering, was referred to as a theoretical resource. Through this, the meaning derived from the three principles was organized into philosophical slogans. From voluntarity, I derived the meaning of the motivation for volunteering as an activity that “takes action on our own even if it is not our responsibility.” And from non-remunerativeness, the basic purpose of volunteering I deprive “desiring to form a reciprocal relationship, not in exchange for compensation,” and from public interest, I deprive constitutes the meaning of the characteristic activity method of volunteering, “realizing public interest by directly responding to the needs of others.”
