자유인을 추구하는 교양의 정신과 반성적 사고의 덕목이 필요한 시점이다. 현대 사회에서 데이터가 지닌 영향력은 재론의 여지가 없는 것이다. 일상의 각 영역이 실시간으로 양화되는 데이터피케이션이 보편화되었고, 데이터 사이언스는 통계학과 컴퓨터 과학이 혼합된 것으로 2010년대 이후 하나의 강력한 트렌드가 되었으며, 이미 우리를 인공지능 시대로 운반하는 급행열차가 되었다. 데이터 리터러시 교양 강좌의 목표는 기술이 중심이 된 현 시대 데이터 논의의 장에 역사적·철학적 배경을 덧입혀 데이터에 대한 수강생들의 총체적 이해를 돕는 것이다. 본 강좌는 기존에 논의되었던 데이터 리터러시를 필두로, 통계적 사고와 데이터 필로소피(philosophy)를 아우르는 폭넓은 주제를 다룬다. 이러한 접근을 통해 수강생들은 데이터피케이션으로 인한 사회 전체와 개인 일상의 변화를 무의식적으로 수용하기보다는, 균형 잡힌 시각으로 바라볼 수 있을 것이다.
Abstract
It is a time that calls for the spirit of liberal education that pursues free individuals and the virtue of reflective thinking. The influence of data in contemporary society is beyond debate. Datafication—the real-time quantification of every aspect of daily life—has become ubiquitous, and data science, a hybrid of statistics and computer science, has emerged as a dominant trend since the 2010s, transforming into an unstoppable force driving us into the artificial intelligence era. The goal of this data literacy liberal arts course is to infuse historical and philosophical context into today’s technology-centric discourse on data, fostering students’ holistic understanding of its role. Building on existing discussions of data literacy, the course covers a broad range of topics, including statistical thinking and the philosophy of data. Through this approach, students will gain a balanced perspective on how datafication is reshaping society and individual lives, moving beyond passive acceptance to critical engagement.
