Abstract
This paper investigates the risk diversification effects of international stock investment from the perspectives of Korean investors using formula suggested by Markowitz(1959, p111). Our sample covers 51 countries with 64,345 stocks and 6,333,430 stock-month observations from February 1994 to December 2013. Using extensive dataset, we find the following. First, diversification can reduce 62.2% of standard deviation(25.7%) when investing in one stock. Second, a portfolio with 20 stocks can diversify up to 90.9% of diversifiable risk. Third, international diversification can reduce additional 3.8%p standard deviation. Forth, investors can achieve addition risk reduction by hedging exchange rate risk. Last, the size of risk reduction through international diversification decreases as the Korean stock market risk declines.
