Abstract

This study aims to explore the early settlement experiences of Koryoin (ethnic Koreans from Ukraine) who entered South Korea following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022. Although they hold the legal status of “overseas Koreans,” these individuals exist at the intersection of war refugees and economic migrants, embodying a hybrid and liminal identity. This research conceptualizes Koryoin evacuees as boundary subjects who do not conform to fixed national or cultural categories and examines the full trajectory of their resettlement, including initial adaptation, livelihood strategies, family reunification, and long-term settlement plans in Korea. Using a narrative research methodology, the study conducted semi-structured in-depth interviews with nine Koryoin participants who arrived after 2022. Their life stories were reconstructed and analyzed along temporal and contextual dimensions. The findings reveal that despite facing significant challenges—such as language barriers, legal restrictions, and economic instability—participants actively utilized informal support networks including religious institutions, NGOs, and Koryoin communities to secure basic living conditions. Caught between temporary stay and long-term settlement, and between returning home and reconstructing life in Korea, the evacuees continually renegotiate their identities through concrete practices such as pursuing children’s education, reuniting with family members, and seeking housing stability. Although they share a common ethnic background, their adaptation strategies diverged depending on individual circumstances, available resources, and institutional conditions. This study positions Koryoin evacuees not merely as diaspora or refugees but as liminal agents navigating the boundaries of identity, policy, and survival. Based on their multilayered settlement experiences, the study calls for the development of inclusive, context-sensitive integration policies to address the structural blind spots in Korea’s current immigration and diaspora frameworks.
