Abstract
This study empirically investigates how the structural characteristics of ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) rating information influence the relationship between ESG ratings and the cost of debt capital for Korean firms. The analysis finds that ESG ratings significantly reduce firms’ cost of capital, and the presence of multiple sources of ESG evaluation further strengthens this effect. However, discrepancies between multiple ESG ratings do not show a significant moderating effect, suggesting that qualitative aspects of ESG information are not yet fully reflected in Korea's capital market. In contrast, when focusing on domestic rating agencies, the interaction with rating disagreement reveals a significant negative relationship, indicating potential concerns over the reliability of ESG assessments and the risk of “greenwashing.” This research confirms, through Korean firms, that mixed findings in prior studies on the link between ESG management and financial performance may stem from the appropriateness of ESG variables used. In addition, the findings highlight the practical need to improve the credibility and consistency of ESG ratings to enhance their signaling function in financial markets. Without harmonized standards and transparent methodologies, discrepancies across rating agencies may dilute the signaling value of ESG information. These insights suggest that institutional improvements to ESG evaluation systems are urgently needed and offer valuable guidance for the development of the ESG finance landscape.
