Abstract
The purpose of this study was to examine the practicing philosophy of Kito-ryu Jujutsu by analyzing its training stages and technical system through the Yin-Yang and Five Elements, as well as the Eight Trigrams of the Zhou Yi. Relevant academic literature and monographs, both domestic and international, were collected and analyzed. These sources addressed the practicing stages and technical system of Kito-ryu. Content analysis and interpretive examination were conducted accordingly. The conclusions were as follows: Frist, Kito-ryu incorporated the principles of Yin-Yang, the concept of the Dual Taeguk, and the Cheon·Ji·In, also expressed in the philosophy of the Triple Taeguk. It also seeks to understand the human body through the philosophical frameworks of the Five Elements and the Five Human Relationships. Second, the Yin-Yang theory and Dual Taeguk within Kito-ryu were based on the binary opposition of Qian (☰) and Kun (☷), while the cosmology of Cheon·Ji·In and the Triple Taeguk includes the remaining trigrams representing a holistic worldview of the universe. Third, the training philosophy of Kito-ryu synthesizes a wide range of ideas: the Yin-Yang, Dual and Triple Taeguk, the cosmology of Cheon·Ji·In, concepts of Karma and Sunyata, the Buddhist notion of ‘天上天下唯我獨尊,’ and the ethical and metaphysical meanings embedded in the Five Elements and Five Human Relationships.
