본 논문의 목적은 링컨의 위기관리 리더십을 재해석하고 다시 한번 되새겨 보는 것이다. 온갖 불리한 것들이 산재해 있는 가운데 전쟁이라는 최대의 갈등과 위기를 어떻게 풀어가야 할까? 대통령으로서 링컨은 문제의 심각성을 잘 알고 있었다. 링컨은 문제가 심각한 만큼 그 문제를 해결하는데 누가 가장 적합한가? 그리고 무엇이 가장 중요한가?에 집중했다. 이 문제를 풀지 않고서는 이 심각한 갈등과 위기를 해결할 수 없는 것이 아닌가? 링컨은 그 문제를 풀어가기 위한 나름의 로드맵을 가지고 결코 서둘지 않고 천천히 그 길을 갔다. 링컨은 지난날 적이거나 반대자들 –시워드, 체이스, 스탠턴– 을 친구로 만들어 그들과 함께 가장 중요한 문제인 노예제도를 폐지하고 소중한 연방을 보존했다. 그리고 링컨은 관용으로 둘로 갈라진 미국을 하나의 미국으로 다시 탄생시켰다.
Abstract
The purpose of this paper is to reinterpret and reflect on Lincoln’s crisis management leadership. How do we resolve the greatest conflict and crisis of war amidst all kinds of unfavorable things? As president, Lincoln was well aware of the seriousness of the problem. Lincoln has a serious problem, so who is best at solving it? And he focused on what matters most. Is it not possible to resolve this serious conflict and crisis without solving this problem? Lincoln had his own roadmap for solving the problem, and he went that route slowly, never in a hurry. Lincoln made friends with his former enemies and opponents -Seward, Chase, and Stanton- and worked with them to abolish the most important problem, slavery and preserve the precious Union. And Lincoln reborn as one America, which had been torn in two by tolerance.
