Abstract

This study delves into European memory laws, a distinct legal framework created to address the grim history of past genocides and human rights abuses and educate future generations. Drawing on Nikolai Kopoosov's insights, it underscores the positive role of these laws in protecting historical truth and curbing extremism. However, it also critically analyzes the inclination to prioritize the Holocaust, relatively marginalizing other genocides. The study posits that the post-WWII victor narrative, combined with Nazism's collapse, cultivated a societal agreement defining the Holocaust as absolute evil and legally solidifying its memory, fueled by a belief in "evil's punishment." This suggests a link between Holocaust memory laws and a shared yearning for atonement and a just world. While these laws significantly aim to uphold historical truth, their connection to the just-world hypothesis can overemphasize certain historical events while underrepresenting others. Consequently, future research should aim to overcome these limitations and pursue balanced remembrance and fair resolutions for all historical tragedies. This is crucial for fully recognizing past suffering, conveying comprehensive lessons to future generations, and fostering a more equitable and just European community.
