Abstract

The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between thinking style and self-regulated learning ability of the scientifically gifted students and their thinking styles by the different MMTIC personality types. The subjects were 55 seventh, eighth and ninth grade middle school students who enrolled at a Center for Science Gifted and Talented Education of a university. The thinking style was postulated that fall along 5 dimensions which are functions, forms, levels, scopes and leanings of the mental self-government. Scientifically gifted students responded to the Thinking Style Inventory(TSI) that standardized Korean version, Self-regulated Ability Inventory and MMTIC(Murphy-Meisgeier Type indicator for Children). The results provided that scientifically gifted students prefer legislative, judical, hierarchic, liberal thinking styles rather than oligarchic and conservative thinking styles. And the levels of self-regulated learning ability(motivation, strategy use and meta-cognition) of the scientifically gifted students were fairly high. In addition, scientifically gifted students preferred Extraversion(E), Intuition(N), Feeling(F), and Perception(P), and they had proportionally higher level in NF index than the others. Also when classified by 16 personality traits, scientifically gifted students were predominantly ENFP type. The results of ANOVA and regression analyses showed that self-regulated learning ability and personality types of scientifically students were significantly correlated with their thinking styles. The results indicated that we need to provide the different curriculum and intervention to the scientifically gifted students, according to their thinking styles and personality types.
