초록

The purpose of this study is to identify the characteristics of the Korean language as expressed in the sign language of the hearing impaired, and to explore the possibility and ramifications of its incorporation into the category of dialect as a form of composition. For this study, Korean sign language was categorized in terms of “language,” “national language,” and “natural language,” and its status of sign language as both language and national language was explored. The aim of this process was to analyze the linguistic importance of sound as a missing language element, as well as the linguistic functions of sound/hearing vs. gesture/seeing, and to identify the linguistic possibilities of sign language as a visual system involving meaningful use of gestures. The discussion compares sign language with two other approaches characteristic of the current linguistic system, dialect and online communication, and identifies the common linguistic/cultural feature of “soundless communication” with the insularity of Jeju dialect and the online text that has become characteristic of modern culture. The linguistic validity of sign language was examined from these perspectives. Jeju dialect and sign language were found to be similar in terms of their being means of communication in closed communities, while internet speech and sign language were found to be linguistically similar in making use of the visual system’s characters and gestures. The conclusion addresses some of the problem areas with sign language, namely its failure to be adopted and incorporated as a national language, and expresses hopes for its future academic and cultural value as a form of language.
