Screening Nostalgia in Korean Television Drama Reply 1988: Reconstructing the Collective Past and Space

Abstract

케이블 드라마 <응답하라 1988>(2015)는 80년대 말 90년대 초의 쌍문동을 배경으로, 다섯 가족의 따뜻한 일상을 재현함으로써 노스텔지어 열풍을 성공적으로 일으킨 화제작이다. 기존 연구들이 80년대 한국의 사회문제와 역사 사건을 결합하여 <응답하라 1988>가 보여주는 유토피아적인 과거를 예리하게 포착했다면, 본 연구는 이 드라마가 시각 요소(텔레비전 문화)와 서사 요소(가족∙이웃 이야기 및 첫사랑 이야기)를 활용하여 과거에 대한 유토피아를 구축하고, 시청자들의 노스텔지어적 감정을 환기시키는 방식을 분석하는 것에 초점을 두고자 한다. 한편 이 드라마는 개인의 작은 서사를 기반으로 집단적 기억에 호소하고 있지만, 시청자들은 역사 고증 놀이와 ‘남편 찾기’ 게임에 적극적으로 참여하면서 드라마가 구축하는 유토피아를 해체하기도 한다. 이는 대중매체와 개인 서사라는 두 가지 방식으로 유토피아를 구축하는 동시에 그를 전복시키는 역설적인 기능(혹은 효과)을 내포한다고 제시하는 것이다. <응답하라1988>가 드러내는 과거의 세계는 보수적이라고 지적하는 것에도 중요 지점이 있지만, 그가 당대 한국 사회에 대중 매체와 개인 서사로 노스텔지어적인 유토피아를 구축∙해체하는 일종의 반성적인 실험이라는 점에서 의미가 있다고 본다.
