This paper aims to examine the issues of error annotation appeared during the construction of Korean learner’s error corpus, and to introduce guidelines that are the basis for annotating of errors in practice. An annotation of errors for the learner corpus is not an easy work because it must be determined by considering the different types of errors produced by the learner as well as their causes. Moreover, due to the nature of the large corpus, multiple workers participate in the work for error annotation, so it is essential to develop guidelines that take into account the efficiency of the work and the consistency of the annotations. Therefore, in this paper, we discussed the principles of annotating error locations, aspects, and layers, focusing on various issues in computer-aided error analysis. As the units of language expanded from form to syntax and discourse, the determination of errors became more difficult. Besides, there were many issues to consider depending on the type of data being annotated, namely spoken and written language. It was also necessary to actively explore one form of error, since it could be annotated multiple ways in terms of error location, aspect and layer. Through these discussions, we suggested guidelines that considered the validity of the error annotation, consistency between annotators, ease of searching and efficiency.
