초록
The present study examines whether native Korean speakers can appropriately use clear speech strategies that seem to behave in a language-universal fashion in their second language (L2), which is English. Clear speech samples collected from 30 native Korean speakers living in South Korea were compared with those from 20 native English speakers in terms of vowel duration and vowel space area. Of particular interest was whether native Korean speakers are sensitive to the effect of speaking style and are able to adjust each of the acoustic measurements as native English speakers do. Vowel duration was a clear speech strategy fully accessible for the Korean speakers, meaning that they lengthened vowel duration in their L2 clear speech in a manner comparable to the native English speakers. By contrast, their vowel space area was not expanded in English clear speech, suggesting that the strategy was only accessible for the native speakers.
