자막 언어 유형과 우연적 어휘 학습 간 상관관계 연구

본 연구는 중국인 한국어 학습자를 대상으로 자막 언어 유형을 다르게 하여 한국 드라마를 시청하였을 때 일어나는 우연적 어휘 학습을 살펴보았다. 연구 참여자들은 중국어 또는 한국어 자막과 함께 영상을 각각 시청하는 두 실험 집단과 자막 없이 영상을 시청하는 통제 집단으로 나뉘어 실험에 참여하였다. 참여자들은 영상 시청 전후 같은 목표어를 포함하는 이해 어휘와 표현 어휘를 측정하는 두 가지 양식의 동일한 사전·사후 평가를 받았다. 처치 후의 점수를 사전 점수와 비교한 결과, 이해 어휘를 학습하는 데 있어 중국어 자막의 효과가 가장 컸으며, 표현 어휘 학습에서는 한국어 자막의 효과가 가장 큰 것으로 나타났다. 결과적으로 본 연구를 통해 자막 언어 유형이 이해 어휘 또는 표현 어휘의 우연적 학습에 영향을 미치는 요인으로 작용함을 알 수 있었고, 학습자의 언어 수준에 맞는 드라마 또는 그에 상응하는 담화 맥락을 갖춘 영상 콘텐츠를 제공할 경우 자막의 유무에 관계없이 영상 시청만으로도 우연적 어휘 학습이 가능함을 확인할 수 있었다.
Abstract
This study attempted to examine the accidental vocabulary learning that occurs in Chinese learners of Korean when watching Korean dramas, according to subtitle language. The participants were divided into two experimental groups that watched videos with Korean and Chinese subtitles (Korean-subtitle and Chinese-subtitle groups) and one control group that watched videos without subtitles (no-subtitle group). Pre- and post-tests were performed before and after the intervention, to evaluate participants' vocabulary knowledge. Chinese subtitles were the most effective for acquiring receptive vocabulary, and Korean subtitles were the most effective for acquiring productive vocabulary. And if videos with drama content or a corresponding discourse are shown according to the learner's language level, accidental vocabulary learning is possible by watching the videos alone, regardless of the presence or absence of subtitles. The findings of this study have educational implications; it suggests an interesting learning method, learning through the inclusion of subtitles in videos, which can lead to effective learning.
