Abstract
The paper measures the technological obsolescence caused by changing price structure in terms of the embodiment hypothesis(or vintage model). We use 1990 and 2000 input-output tables of Korea, which mean the average practice technology in 1990 and 2000, respectively. We use the rate of economic surplus as the proxy of technological obsolescence for 9 main industries, including food processing, textiles, chemicals, non-steel metals, steels, machinery, electronics, precision machinery, and transportation equipment. This approach is based on Salter(1969) that emphasizes the economic aspect of technology. The result shows that the embodiment hypothesis is not accepted for the overall manufacturing sector. However, we found the vintage effect(an increase of technological obsolescence over time) in textiles, chemicals, non-steel metals, electronics, and transportation equipment for both 1990 technology and 2000 technology. In addition, the hypothesis that the technological obsolescence speed of old technology is greater than that of new technology is accepted for only chemical industry. These results need to be confirmed by further studies focusing on specific equipments, more-divided individual industries, and firms’ behavior.
