Abstract
This study examines the relationship between stock returns volatility and its returns in 8 East Asia countries, such as China, Indonesia, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, Philippine, Thailand, and Singapore, using data on weekly stock market price index over the period 1994–2012. In this process, we use EGARCH-M models accommodating the external effects of stock market volatility in USA and dummy variables for the years of East Asian financial crisis and global crisis. The estimation results are summarized as follows. First, it is found that the impacts of stock returns volatility on its returns are positive and statistically significant in some countries, such as China, Indonesia, Japan, and Philippine. Second, the stock market volatility in USA is negatively and significantly associated with the stock returns in Indonesia, Japan, and Philippine, regardless of model specifications. Third, most East Asia counties show the asymmetry of stock returns volatility, except China and Indonesia. Regression results also suggest that the impacts of unexpected negative (positive) shocks on stock returns are negative (positive) in all countries. In addition, the impacts of unexpected negative shocks are greater than those of unexpected positive shocks.
