Abstract

The purpose of this study is to interpret Kim Won–seok’s poems from the perspective of analytical psychology and, based on this, to elucidate their educational significance. The core of analytical psychology, as proposed by C.G. Jung, lies in individuation, where the ego, the center of conscious life, integrates elements of the unconscious to restore the wholeness of the self. Individuation starts from the will to realize the true self, hidden by the persona. It is achieved by bringing the archetypes of the unconscious, including the shadow, the dark counterpart of the ego, into consciousness. Through individuation, an individual accepts previously unacceptable life issues and forms a mature and harmonious personality. Kim Won–seok’s poems can be approached from an analytical psychology perspective because they deeply reveal the inner consciousness of humans through everyday experiences. Analyzing Kim Won–seok’s poems from this perspective shows that the poetic speaker initially exhibits sincere adherence to and obsession with the persona, but then attempts to break away from it. Through longing for and recognizing the shadow, the speaker positively transforms and accepts it. Kim Won–seok’s poems illustrate both the persona and the shadow, which lie at the extremes of duality, suggesting the possibility of self–realization through the integration of these opposites. Interpreting Kim Won–seok’s poems from the viewpoint of analytical psychology has the following educational implications. First, it allows learners to lay the groundwork for self–realization by examining the process of individuation embedded in his poems. Second, learners can experience psychological liberation through the consciousness of the unconscious and foster empathetic abilities toward others, promoting personal growth. Third, by interpreting the works based on various metaphors and symbols related to analytical psychology, learners can develop their literary imagination and creativity.
