Abstract
Hilary and Hsu(2013)(Hereafter, HH) report that analysts’ forecast informativeness is higher when the analysts’ forecast error is more consistent. This study examines that whether analysts’ forecast consistency is positively associated with the forecast informativeness in Korean stock market(i.e., KSE). Using financial data and analysts’ earnings forecasts from 2001 to 2012, we find evidence that the higher analysts’ forecast consistency is, the more informative analysts’ earnings forecast is, similar to HH. Moreover, we show that the effect of analysts’ forecast consistency on the forecast informativeness is higher than that of analysts’ forecast accuracy. Our results indicate that since analysts’ forecast consistency can be a primary characteristic of analysts, future research on analysts forecast behavior need to expand previous literatures by considering analysts’ forecasts consistency. This study contributes to the practical field by suggesting investors take analysts’ forecast consistency into account in utilizing analysts’ earnings forecast for firm valuation.
