Abstract

This paper contemplates the meaning of Hwang-ji-lun in the philosophy of Jeng Je-du. The term 'Hwang ji' is first shown in the ancient script 『Shang shu -Hong fan pian』. In Zhu Xi's debate with Liu Jiu yuan over the meaning of this term, Zhu Xi translates it as 'Standard of Lord' connoting the Principle(li), while Liu Jiu yuan translates it as 'Great Mean' connoting the mind (xin). Zhu Xi attached a detailed annotation to the term, while Liu Jiu-yuan only mentioned it briefly. Jeng Je-du, being fully aware of both translation, follows Zhu Xi's translation in interpreting「Hong fan pian」; it is perhaps due to the fact that Liu's annotation is too brief. Jeng's translation, however, differentiates itself with that of Zhu Xi in some points. For instance, in interpreting 'Ji' Jeng incorporates Liu's translation, arguing that while 'Ji' refers to 'Great Mean', it has connotation of 'standard' as well. It signifies that Ji is not a subjective standard. At the same time, Jeng criticizes Zhu Xi that Zhu Xi overlooked the problem of Hwang ji's establishment, leaving it without any content. Jeng introduces lines of Dang ping as the content and the identity of 'Hwang ji'. In understanding Dang ping as the ideal state of mind, Jeng follows Liu's translation; on the other hand, in translating other lines of Dang ping, Jeng follows Zhu Xi. Thus seen, the philosophy of Jeng Je-du could be described as a compromise between Zhu Xi and Liu Jiu-yuan. On the other perspective, however, it could also be seen as standing on Liu's line while embodying Zhu Xi's interpretation now and then.
