Abstract

This study examines the debate about cultural identity in the modern period, focusing on Kim Jeong‐seol’s view of Pungryu. He establishes a system for religions and ideologies through Pungryu covering the period from petrography to the modern age. Through this, as a unique thought of ​​Korea, Pungryu is reborn into the spirit of a nation bearing cultural legitimacy. Furthermore, he chooses the way of an unofficial history (外史) as a way to inform the public of the spirit of Pungryu. He draws historical figures of Pungryu and portrays them with his fictional imagination. As a result of analyzing the works, Pungryu of characters is established through three processes. That is, it becomes a kind person through the process of Jae-bit-gal to Jae-gil-su and Jae-jak. The feature of these characters was in Sau-maz-da. He also used Pungryu to describe the Pungdo of the person, while saying that Pungryu for the Korean language was ‘meot’. As such, the Pungryugaek established in his view of Pungryu can be regarded as a cultural ideal that was born in a modern situation and at the same time a genetic gene bearing cultural identity.
