Abstract
Chinese folk belief on the god of wealth reflects the pursuit of wealthy life. Since China open it's door after cultural revolution, it turned into the market economy system and the worship of the god of wealth became the most popular folk belief in China. The folk belief made the expression of the pursuit of wealth free and public, even inviolable. Economy system of commodity and market made the people think the pursuit of wealth positively, even worthy, but also made the people think about the moral standard together. The god of wealth is the latest god, but the most popular god in folk belief in China, because it cares the fortune and the success of business. Along with the foundation of Communist China, all wealth belonged to the nation, there was no place for the worship of god of wealth. But Along with the economic reform in 1980's, China recovered the market economy system and the worship of the god of wealth was brought back. Now not only the marchant but ordinary people also enshrine the god of wealth at house. It shows us that people's desire of wealth expressed without reserve along with the policy of nation. Actually the worship of god of wealth is the icon of very practical view of wealth formed among Chinese people for a long time. It accept various folk beliefs and become multiple symbol of total happiness including wealth, longevity, good luck etc.. That's why it becomes the most beloved and popular folk belief and we can guess there would come out more folklore and festivals about the god of wealth from now on. We can find the Chinese practical value to affirm the value of wealth from Si Maqian, which is pretty different from the orthodox Confucianism. But the appearance of god of wealth in Chinese folk belief was later than that. It seems that the worship was formed from Song dynasty when the urban culture along with the development of commerce flourished in some degree, and became popular in Ming and Qing dynasty. There are many gods of wealth in China. The most representative gods are Marshal Zhao(Zhao Gungming), Emperor Guan(Guan Yu), and Liu Hai with the golden Toad. Through the research on Chinese worship of god of wealth, I found that Chinese people tried to keep the balance between the pursuit of wealth and the moral sence. So the gods like Zhao Gongming, Guan Yu take charge of the wealth, but also put emphasis on the righteousness, credibility and sharing. For example, Liu Hai with Golden Toad shows us the very typical representation of total myth of Chinese folk belief mixing with the various symbols of folk beliefs. In that case, the pursuit of wealth is also based on the healthy sharing. It is one of the most important point in the worship of the god of wealth, different from the mammon worship, though some Chinese scholars satirized very cynically that there is only the worship of god of wealth in Chinese folk beliefs now.
