Abstract

Objectives : The purpose of the present study was to determine the effects of body positioning on percutaneous oxygen saturation(SpO₂) in newborn infants. Methods : Subjects included ten preterm infants admitted to neonatal intensive unit(NICU) and ten fullterm infants admitted to nursery unit at Chonnam University Hospital, as assigned in convenient sampling from July to August 2002. Measurements of SpO₂were made with MDE pulse oximetry. The subjects were maintained for 20 minutes at each position (supine, prone, right lateral, left lateral). Results : SpO₂at the supine position was significantly lower than that at the prone(p=0.0353), right lateral(p=0.0154) and left lateral(p=0.0032) position in preterm infants. SpO₂at the left lateral position was significantly higher than that at the supine position in fullterm infants(p=0.0150). Conclusions : These results may indicate that prone, right lateral, and left lateral position are more effective in preterm infants and left lateral position is more effective in fullterm infants to improve oxygenation of arterial blood.
