Abstract

This study is an effort to find out how we can improve our humane sensibility toward neighbors and outward’s world. Seeing our contemporary society’s most grave problem as ethical one, we try to apprehend possible causes of it, and acknowledge that they are narrowly related with the sterile intellectualism of today’s learning(學) and education(敎). As alternatives to that, we see Jung Ha-gok’s(鄭霞谷,1649-1736) Confucian way of self-cultivation(聖學), and as his Christian partner, Rudolf Steiner(1861-1925)’s anthroposophical(人智學) ideas on human education. They have many great points to the other understanding of human mind(理) and nature(性), and the way to build alternative human society. In addition to those, this study attempts to compare modern scientist Fransisco Varela’s(1946-2001) ideas of cognitive science, who, by himself, made attempts to compare his ideas of humanbeing’s ethical know-how with Mencian understanding on the human innate knowledge(良知). The goal of this study is to bring to the light a possible ethical and educational methode how to combine humanbeing’s intellect(知性), humanity(人性) and spirituality(靈性). Because we think that those works can’t be done without understanding of human religious heritages, this study is at the same time a religious and theological dialogue between Confucianiansm and Christianity. We believe in human innate ability to think(思/知) and to open new dimensions of life. It is an attempt to construct another Confucianism and another Christianity.
