Abstract
The Leshanzhai version of The Sequel to HongLouMeng(续红楼梦) was likely translated around the same time as HongLouMeng(红楼梦). The reason the translators chose to render five sequels of HongLouMeng alongside the original might be that they regarded these six works as a unified literary corpus. However, if readers understood HongLouMeng and its sequels through the lens of "sequels" in family novels in late Joseon Dinasty, they could easily perceive them as a literary cluster comparable to that of family novels and their sequels. Compared to the Leshanzhai version of HongLouMeng, the translation accuracy of The Sequel to HongLouMeng is significantly higher. This could be attributed to the translators’ greater familiarity with the content, language, emotion, and themes of the sequel, enabling them to translate the work more effectively. The most distinctive feature of the Leshanzhai version's translation is the deletion of certain parts of the original. The omitted content primarily falls into three categories: first, various couplets and individual poems, especially those from the illusory realm; second, content with erotic undertones; and third, the twelve new songs in the final volume and the concluding poem. Examining the translation of Chinese novels during the Joseon period, examples of bilingual parallel translation are extremely rare, with the majority being simple Korean translations. In this regard, the Leshanzhai version of HongLouMeng: A Sequel represents a more common translation form than that of HongLouMeng.
