Abstract

The goal of this study is to reinterpret Wang Yang-Ming’s Study of Heart & Mind in an accessible and understandable way in a contemporary context, focusing on the theme of ‘Shift in perspective’, In doing so, it aims to offer Wang's philosophy as a practicable philosophical resource that can be utilised by people of our time in their life crises. ‘Shift in Perspective’ is a key part of philosophical counseling. In fact, not only philosophical counseling, but all counseling and educational difficulties often lead to desirable results through a ‘Shift in perspective’. We often hear the phrase “shift your perspective.” in our daily lives, but whether it is something that we deliberately try to do or something that happens spontaneously, and how it happens, is worthy of careful exploration. In relation to this topic, Wang Yang-Ming reveals that what we perceive as things that have a certain logic are actually events that act in different contexts and have different meanings depending on our perspective. In doing so, Wang Yang-Ming highlights what goes on inside us and why inner work is so important, opening up a whole realm of inner study that involves “shifting perspectives”. So when life is shaking, when life feels cornered, Wang Yang-Ming's Study of Heart & Mind shows us a philosophical guideline to where to turn our attention and what to do within ourselves.
