Abstract

This thesis attempts to contemplate emotion’s moral implication by focusing on cognitive emotion understanding, which does not understand emotion simply as a physical sense but also draws upon cognitive elements within this. However, the author critically acknowledges that such cognitive approach method is limited in the way that it cannot explain the circumstances in which a subject’s emotional experience and propositional judgment do not accord. This thesis does not understand emotion as either just physical sense or cognitive sense but intends to approach it in a way that integrates the two and attempts to discuss this through the Theory of Sentiments in Yang-Ming studies. This is because the author believes that within Yang-Ming’s philosophy an integrating point of moral judgment and subjective feeling and the dimension that integrates moral cultivation on an individual level and public morality on a social level can be discovered. To effectively unfold such discussion, this thesis first observes he integrative characteristic among body, mind, and object, which is apparent in philosophy of Yang-Ming. Next, it will focus on the task of controlling emotion for realization of Liang Zhi and recuperation of the mind's noumenon, which is the ultimate goal of Yang-Ming. However, this thesis emphasizes the fact that regulating emotion in Yang-Ming Studies is not a concept of control, moderation, and oppression, but is a means of emotion relief. Accordingly, the author attempts to imply that for Yang-Ming, controlling of emotion is not a method of external enforcement but is closely connected with an opportunity for subject formation. Through this kind of discussion, the Theory of Sentiments in Yang-Ming studies can be viewed from a new perspective and can develop a sense of moral implication in the contemporary society.
