Abstract

This paper aims to analyze the academic perspective and practical aspects of Myeongjae Yun Jeung(明齋 尹拯) and explore their implications for modern education. While previous research has provided considerable insights into Myeongjae’s academic discourse and educational philosophy, this study focuses specifically on the characteristics of his “Learning for Oneself” and on its contemporary educational significance. Myeongjae was a scholar who rigorously pursued Learning for Oneself, and his unwavering commitment to this principle appears to have been rooted in the hardships of his early years. Although he was born and raised in an academically affluent environment, his childhood was marked by the national calamity of the Qing’s invasion of Joseon. The tragic suicide of his mother during this turmoil led him to abandon external motivations for learning and instead focus on intrinsic motivation. As a means of transcending this personal suffering, he devoted himself entirely to Learning for Oneself. This lifelong commitment to academic discipline shaped his scholarly characteristics, emphasizing Ipji(立志, firm resolve) and Musil(務實, practical sincerity). Myeongjae’s firm resolve was deeply rooted, focusing on self-examination, self-healing, and personal transformation. His commitment to Learning for Oneself was reflected in his pursuit of Silsim(實心, sincerity), Silgong(實功, practical effort), and Sildeok(實德, genuine virtue), forming the foundation of his Musil philosophy. The essence of his Sil(實, practicality) can be summarized as follows: (1) rejecting abstract discourse and instead engaging in diligent study with tangible outcomes, (2) treating all aspects of daily life as subjects of academic inquiry and practical learning, and (3) fostering a sense of urgency in order to bring about genuine personal transformation. These principles, combined with both internal and external influences, helped shape Myeongjae into an open-minded and inclusive scholar. Ultimately, his approach to Learning for Oneself was a deeply earnest endeavor to resolve and sublimate the suffering that defined his life. His philosophy presents a valuable model for contemporary education, which is often dominated by Learning for Others(爲人之學) driven by extrinsic motivations and Learning by Rote(口耳之學), which lacks true intellectual autonomy. By revisiting Myeongjae’s commitment to Learning for Oneself, we may find insights that can help address the shortcomings of modern education and restore the intrinsic value of learning.
