Abstract
This study diagnoses a Korean version of the “post-truth” phenomenon, which has emerged as a negative undercurrent in the digital age, and proposes a response based on the critical thought of the Hagok School. The previous administration’s call to eliminate “fake news” and its rationalization of martial law can be seen as representative cases of power-driven ‘bullshit’—discourse that is indifferent to truth but instrumental in consolidating power—in contemporary Korea. Produced with the political goal of maintaining power, such bullshit spread in an exclusionary manner through certain social media platforms under the banner of anti-communism. To address this issue, not only institutional responses but also a deeper commitment to self-reflection and critical thinking is needed in order to foster a healthier culture of public discourse. The Hagok School, through its critique of distorted public reasoning, offers a framework of critical thinking that remains relevant in modern society. Its theories of “the mind is principle”(心卽理說) and “vital force is principle”(生理說) highlight the importance of intellectual autonomy and openness as traits of critical thought. Moreover, its critique of the mismatch between name and substance and its rejection of the guise of moral justification(假道義)—both rooted in the principle of the unity of knowledge and action—offer a metacognitive framework for interrogating the essence of social concepts and the standards of critical reasoning.
